The name is inspired by the Maasai words “meringet” and “surutia.” These stand for the beaded rings a girl first wears coming of age, and the coil she takes on later as a married woman — worn first as a girl, then as a wife, never removed, only added to. This tradition, unique to Maasai women, gives their jewellery a deep sense of personal history, unlike anywhere else in our country. The Merutia lamp’s layered design subtly reflects this tradition, suggesting a home, like a life, that grows by adding to itself rather than diminishing.
